Stained Kitchen Cabinets, Mahogany Tuscan Stain Sample

Stained Kitchen Cabinets, MahoganyTuscan Stain Sample

Stained Cabinets can include many styles and shades, including Mahogany, Cherry and Ebony. Some specialty finishes like Tuscan Staining are considered stains. The Tuscan is the sample here. The second sample here is called Chilled Latte.

These are very popular and will be featured on this site. Contrary to popular opinion, stain finishes can be done beautifully without oil based products and without stripping the original finish. All this can be accomplished with kitchen cabinet painting. You will be amazed at how easy these stained finishes are with the easy to do “do it yourself” finishes.

After all Cabinet doors, bases and drawers have been sanded and cleaned according to your surface as noted in surface guide, begin painting.

Application for Stained Kitchen Cabinets, Mahogany Tuscan Stain Sample

Pour some of the SET COAT CLEAR mixture into a small paint tray. When brushing, paint the recessed areas of the cabinet doors first with a cut/slanted paint brush painting in one direction. Then complete the process with the foam roller on the flat spaces. Be sure to saturate the roller, but offload excess paint on tray so you have no drips. Do the same process on the bases, flat spaces and drawers. This is important for stained kitchen cabinets to create a clean base for layering of stains.

***Hint, it is not necessary to empty all the cabinets of their contents, just push items away from edge and tape the inner trim areas to paint neatly. It is also not necessary to paint inside the box areas of the cabinets.

Let Dry Fours Hours or preferably overnight.

After having done this step serves as a clear primer, and creates a clean base to prepare your stained finish. Now you are ready for the next step of the Stained Kitchen Cabinets Mahogany Tuscan Stained Sample.

Sand Edges and areas that would wear naturally – corners, edges, near handles. Be sure to sand in the direction of the natural grain. Do not sand in random areas that would not naturally wear. I am sure you have seen some furniture with poorly done distressing that looks like a factory random removal of paint. The idea here is to create a beautiful custom kitchen cabinet that looks like high end furniture.

You may adjust the degree of distressing by adding some knicks in the wood. I recommend some nail holes, some depressions and a just a touch of wormholes. Do not overdo this step. You may also want to create a “key bob.” This is a random collection of keys, washers, bolts, etc. Put on a key chain or in an old sock and randomly hit the wood in certain places. This gives the wood a worn look that offers a unique distressing that looks natural.

The next step is to stain the pieces.

In the Staining Step, you take the First Mixture called Stain Mixture above (made with FX Thinner) and Brush in a downward motion with a chip brush in the natural direction of the wood grain. Let the Stain settle deeply into the recently sanded areas. NOW, the next step is very important and is what allows this to look old and like a Stained Kitchen Cabinets Mahogany Tuscan Stain Sample.

You take a balled up piece of cheesecloth and pat the stained areas in a downward motion and remove about 70% of the stain as you go. Then go back over with a fresh ball of cheese cloth and stroke (rather than pat) downward as you go. This creates two different motions in the stain and resembles natural aging processes in wood.

After the stain has set up a bit, take Badger Brush and stroke it in small soft strokes in a vertical manner. Then horizontal, then in a vertical manner again. The badger brush gives the layered softness to the stained kitchen cabinet Mahogany Tuscan classic look.

Complete this step on all cabinet surfaces. And let this dry very well – Overnight is best!

The next step is to apply a toning glaze to the pieces. It will be a soft elegant touch that sets apart a custom kitchen cabinet. This is an awesome finish for kitchen islands! This also goes very well with many stone kitchen backsplashes.

Glaze Step

Use the mixture you prepared (see above). Apply a thin coat of glaze with the 2” Chip brush going in the direction of the grain of the wood. Use the 4”chip brush in the larger areas like flat spaces at the cabinet ends or large pantry doors. Cover the entire door with glaze. While the glaze is wet, remove the desired amount (usually about 80 %) with a rag. Do not use cheesecloth here, because we want a stroked look that is different to the prior step.

This allows the glaze the gather in the recessed spaces. You may leave more or less on for a custom kitchen cabinet look. You will have glaze collecting in the recently sanded edges and will color these spaces slightly which is what you want. An aged edge would not be the stark wood color of recently sanded wood. The last step is very important. You take some of the dark brown faux color and pour into a cup. Do not add anything to it. It is very concentrated which is what we want. Then take dry, clean chip brush and dip just the side of the brush in the color. Be sure to offload the excess and have just a little bit on the brush.

Take this brush and run it just on the edges of the cabinet’s ends, corners and random raised area. Have a rag handy and wipe off excess immediately and leave just a tiny residue to outline the areas. This will give a really old, aged look. It’s beautiful when done correctly. So be careful to only hit the areas you desire.

This method is called “Tipping” and is a furniture painting technique. You may apply this mixture to any of the holes you made with distressing. Apply with a fine paint brush or Q-tip so you do not get any on the surrounding areas. If you mess up, simply wipe quickly with a rag with some Aqua Glaze on it.

Let this dry overnight.

Top Coat

After this has dried overnight, apply top coat of AquaGuard Flat in the same manner with brush and roller. Allow this to dry at least 24 hours before using cabinetry or replacing hardware. Now you have a magnificent Stained Kitchen Cabinets Mahogany Tuscan Sample.
