“HOW TO” STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONSPREP *Before Beginning, see surface instructions based on the surface of your cabinet, Guide to surface prep.(link) Prepare surface as outlined in Surface Prep section. Prepare area to be painted by taping off walls and areas that you don’t want to get paint on. Use plastic and cloth drop cloths to protect floors, counter tops and appliances. After all Cabinet doors, bases and drawers have been sanded and cleaned according to your surface as noted in surface guide, begin painting. MIX for Contemporary Urban Silver Painted Kitchen Cabinets Mix One Gallon Silver Metallic Set Coat with 2 oz Earth Brown Colorant and 2oz Silver Stain and Seal. Mix well with paint stick or use a hand mixer dedicated for this purpose. With the Use of Set Coat, you do not need to also prime the cabinet first. This product acts as a primer diving deep into the surface. If using a sprayer, you need to thin this product with water about 10-20%. Test until the mixture drips one drip per second from a paint stick. (See section on sprayer tips for help) APPLY Pour some of this mixture into a small paint tray. When brushing, paint the recessed areas of the cabinet doors first with a cut/slanted paint brush painting in one direction. Then complete the process with the foam roller on the flat spaces. Be sure to saturate the roller, but offload excess paint on tray so you have no drips. Do the same process on the bases, flat spaces and drawers. ***Hint, it is not necessary to empty all the cabinets of their contents, just push items away from edge and tape the inner trim areas to paint neatly. It is also not necessary to paint inside the box areas of the cabinets. Let Dry Fours Hours or preferably overnight. Apply second coat in the same manner. **If you want to use the Modern Master's Paint, use it here for the Second Coat. (You will still need the set coat layer as a primer).
Mix - 2 mixturesSilver Glaze – Mix Silver Stain and Seal 4 oz with One Quart of FX Thinner Toning Glaze - 1 part of Van Dyke Brown Colorant to 4 parts Aqua Glaze to deepen the contemporary urban style. Apply a thin coat of the Silver glaze with the 2” Chip brush going in the direction of the grain of the wood. Use the 4”chip brush in the larger areas like flat spaces at the cabinet ends or large pantry doors. Cover the entire door with glaze. While the glaze is wet, remove the desired amount (usually about 80 %) with a rag. It is desired to leave slight brush strokes in this finish. This allows the glaze the gather in the recessed spaces. You may leave more or less on for a custom kitchen cabinet look on your Contemporary Urban Silver Painted Kitchen Cabinets. Next, after this step is dry, apply the TONING Glaze.Apply a thin coat of glaze with the 2” Chip brush going in the direction of the grain of the wood. Use the 4”chip brush in the larger areas like flat spaces at the cabinet ends or large pantry doors. Cover the entire door with glaze. While the glaze is wet, remove the desired amount (usually about 80 %) with a ball of cheese cloth. The Cheesecloth allows some glaze to remain all over in a mottled look for a more subtle look. When the desired look is achieved, let dry and repeat on each area. This should be a thin overall glaze and not be evident of strokes. TOPCOAT You will want to protect your beautiful Contemporary Urban Silver Painted Kitchen Cabinets. After this has dried overnight, apply top coat of AquaGuard in the same manner with brush and roller. Allow this to dry at least 24 hours before using cabinetry or replacing hardware. Idea for Apartment Decorating and Teen Bedroom Decorating
*** Tip -- Another amazing way to use this finish is use it in small spaces you need to decorate, like apartment decorating on a teen bedroom furniture. Many times smaller pieces that fit well in apartments or teen bedrooms are harder to find and often might not be in the most updated finishes. Teens usually love the contemporary look. It is often found in Pottery Barn type finishes. Apply this finish over brown furniture, and it is a great home interior update. If you like the tightwad gazette, and are looking for a budget remodel, find some of the older mahogany furniture (most everyone has some of this in their house). Give it a decorating makeover with this finish. The brown is actually a great base for this finish and is a wonderful new look. Whether for Contemporary Urban Silver Painted Kitchen Cabinets or furniture, you will be very pleased.
